Irene Anton participated in the Nanobio&Med conference on Barcelona

Irene’s oral presentaiton

From the 20th to the 22nd of November 2018 the PhD fellow Irene Anton attended to the NanoBio&Med conference organized at the Parc Científic of de Barcelona. This multidisciplinary congress was very useful to catch up with the recent advances in the rapidly evolving field of nanobiotechnology. Irene got the opportunity to present her results regarding bacterial nanocellulose interactions with human cells with both a poster and a talk. Her poster entitled “Bacterial nanocellulose and bacterial nanocellulose nanocomposites as substrates for cell culture” was selected for the best poster award sponsored by the journal Biomolecules MDPI.

Thanks to the MDPI publishing group for the prize!

Best POLYMAR2018 oral presentation award for Sole Roig!

From the 8th to the 12th of October 2018 Sole Roig, PhD candidate at the N&N group, participated in the 2nd Conference in Polymer Science (POLYMAR) dedicated to biopolymers and taking place in a cruise through the Aegean sea. Her presentation “Microstructuration and functionalization of bacterial cellulose” was awarded with the Best Oral Presentation by an early stage researcher price sponsored by Publishing MDPI, congratulations Sole!

“POLYMAR2018 was a very interesting congress with a new format I have never seen before. The industrial point of view of most of the talks offered me the possibility to learn new approaches that we can apply on our lab in order to make easier the commercialization of the materials we are investigating.”

Anna Roig attended the 2018 Albus Scientific Awards Ceremony at Grifols

On 10th Otober 2018 Anna Roig attended the 2018 Albus Scientific Awards Ceremony at Grifols headquarters in Sant Cugat. As one of the two awardees of the 2017 edition, she presented the results on the Albumin-iron oxide nanocages project. Carlos Moya is the post-doc working in this project. This year’s award recipients are:

  • Paolo Caraceni, MD, Department of Medical and Surgical Sciences Alma Mater Studiorum University of Bologna Bologna, Italy
Project: Long‐term albumin administration in patients with decompensated cirrhosis: clinical and pathophysiological implications
  • Hanadi Sleiman, PhD, Department of Chemistry, McGill University, Montreal, Canada
Project: Albumin as a passive targeting agent: effect of the protein binding on stability, bio distribution and therapeutic outcome of oligonucleotides and DNA nanoparticles

Congratulations Jan for your INPhINIT diploma!

3rd July 2018

Jan Grzelak attended the award ceremony from La Caixa Fellows in Caixa Forum (Barcelona) and received a diploma for his excellence fellowship supported by La Caixa to perform his PhD at the N&N group on the topic “Mesoporous magnetic nanorods for theranostics”. Two other ICMAB researchers have also been granted with by a PhD grant from La Caixa and also assisted the ceremony.

Congratualtions Jan!

Congratulations to Nerea Murillo for the Extraordinay PhD Award!

We congratulate Nerea Murillo and her supervisors Anna Roig and Concepció Domingo for the Extraordinary PhD Award (Premi Extraordinari de Doctorat) for her thesis entitled “MULTIFUNCTIONAL SILICA-BASED NANOPARTICLES FOR BIOMEDICAL APPLICATIONS“. Nerea defended her PhD thesis at ICMAB on 2014, her project aimed to fabricate hybrid (organic-inorganic) complex materials as drug carriers  using supercritical fluids. The award ceremony will take place next Friday 18th May at the Auditori de Lletres i de Psicologia of the Autonomous Univeristy of Barcelona.

MAGBBRIS project kicks off

The MAGBBRIS Consortium, where Yajie Zhang and Anna Roig participate, celebrated its kickoff meeting during the 26th and 27th of March 2018. The project coordinator, Anna Rosell, welcomed the participants at the Vall d’Hebron Research institute (VHIR), in Barcelona.

During the meetings the participants had the opportunity to understand better the EuroNanoMed Joint Call thanks to Janna Slabbekoorn from the Competitive Calls Unit from VHIR. Afterwards they heard a little bit about each partner’s background related to the project. the members of the consortium could also learn about the past work using endothelial progenitor cells for the treatment of stroke, nanocapsule synthesis, pre-clinical and clinical magnetic resonance imaging, different in vitro models of the blood-brain barrier, manufacturing of high volumes of proteins under GMP conditions and magnetic targeting of nanomaterials.

We wish a lot of success to the MAGBBRIS project!

LLAVOR Project was awarded to the Group NN

PLANT HEALING, a project lead by Dr. Anna Laromaine from the Group Nanoparticles and Nanocomposites at the Institut of Materials Science in Barcelona (ICMAB) and in collaboration with the Group of Bacterial pathogens and plant cell death from the Center for Research in Agricultural Genomics (CRAG), was awarded by Els Fons Europeus de Desenvolupament Regional i el Departament d’Empresa i Coneixement de la Generalitat de Catalunya with a grant of 20.000€. The PLANT HEALING 2016 LLAVOR 00052 project will work to offer a novel material that could be implemented in current grafting protocols with no extra time or effort to significantly improve graft efficiency. PLANT HEALING will make an agricultural breakthrough, by developing a new nanocomposite material containing silver nanoparticles linked to bacterial nanocellulose.

High participation of the N&N group at the 3rd Scientific Meeting of PhD Students

November 7th and 8th:
ICMAB hosted the third edition of the Meeting of PhD students from the Barcelona Nanotechnology Cluster – Bellaterra (ICMAB, ICN2, IMB-CNM, UAB, ALBA). This event is intended at  promoting the networking between them in an academic and scientific environment. The PhD students from the N&N group participated largely with posters and oral contributions:

Posters:
Miquel Torras: Fast and simple microwave synthesis of functional multimaterial goldnanoparticles
Sole Roig: Engineering bacterial cellulose during the biosynthesis
Yajie Zhang: Multifunctional Platform of Nanocapsules as Drug Carrier for Angiogenic Therapies

Oral presentations:
Zhongrui Luo: Evaluation of the nano-bio interactions between Au-NPs and Caenorhabditis elegans
Zheng Ma: Understanding ferroelectricity in epsilon-Fe2O3 films
Irene Anton: Functionalized bacterial nanocellulose for epithelial regeneration

And… Irene was awarded with the second award for the best oral presentation!

Anna Roig receives the Albus Award for her project on “Albumin iron-oxide nanocages”

On Tuesday 3rd October, Anna Roig received the Albus Award 2017, by Grifols, to develop a project on “Albumin iron-oxide nanocages”. The Awards Ceremony took place at the Grifols Museum, which is located in the same building where the Grifols company started their activities, in 1940. Every year, the Albus Program gives two Albus Awards of 50,000 € to the best two innovative ideas related to albumin and its role as a therapeutic product. The project proposals are assessed by independent reviewers. In this year’s edition, the two award recipients were Anna Roig and Dr. Karl Oettl, from the Medical University of Graz (Austria).
Good job Anna! We wish you good luck with this new project!
