We welcome Dani Beltran, who will stay with us until February 2017. Dani Beltran already did his Final Degree Project in our group (Synthesis and crystallization of SiO2-GeO2 gels), supervised by Martí Gich, while he was studying Nanoscience and Nanotechnology at UAB. Now he is a M.Sc. student in Biomedical Engineering at UB-UPC and will work with us in a project of crystallization of metastable phases under negative pressures, also supervised by Martí Gich.

This paper describes a novel and convenient synthetic strategy for the preparation of magnetically responsive silica nanospheres decorated with mixed ligand protected gold nanoparticles. Gold nanoparticles are attached to the silica surface via stable amide bond formation. The hierarchical nanospheres show promising results as a reusable and efficient catalyst for esterification reactions and they can be recovered through a simple magnetic separation.

The awards ceremony took place today, February 11, at the UB Paranimf, and was also the ceremony to award the epidemiologist and oncologist Francesc Xavier Bosch with the honorary doctorate (doctor honoris causa). Dr. F. Xavier Bosch is well-known for participating in the development of the HPV vaccine.

Complex 3D nacrostructured nanoparticles are transformed from amorphous silica into pure polycrystalline α-quartz using catalytic quantities of alkaline earths as devitrificants. Walls as thin as 10 nm could be crystallized without losing the architecture of the particles. The roles of cation size and the mol% of incorporated devitrificant on crystallization behavior are studied, with Mg2+, Ca2+, Sr2+ and Ba2+ allproducing pure α-quartz under certain conditions.

This thesis aimed to fabricate hybrid (organic-inorganic) complex materials as drug carriers using supercritical fluids. For that purpose, two main objectives have been addressed: first, evaluation of the potentiality of porous silica-based materials synthesized without using porogenic agents as drug delivery systems; and second, exploiting the utility of SCFs in the synthesis and functionalization of those materials. During the realization of this work, silica-based nanostructured materials have been synthesized, loaded with a model drug, physical and chemically modified on their surface, and their interaction with relevant biological entities and media were investigated.

A ring-opening polymerization process catalyzed by compressed CO2 at low pressure and temperature and in the absence of any organic solvent is presented. Fabrication of hybrid materials involving two types of silica nanoparticles (one of them with a magnetic core) coated with hyperbranched polyethyleneimine of low molecular weight was succesfully achieved. Properties of the obtained materials are identified as excellent for some biomedical applications
