Nanomaterials

Nanomaterials are materials engineered at the nanometre scale, where quantum effects and high surface-to-volume ratios lead to properties not seen in their bulk counterparts. At the NN Group, nanomaterials are at the heart of everything we do — from their controlled synthesis to their integration into functional systems for real-world applications.

We specialise in the rational design of nanoparticles and nanocomposites with tailored size, shape, composition, and surface chemistry. These include metal and metal oxide nanoparticles, hybrid organic–inorganic systems, and biopolymer-based nanocomposites. Our goal is to understand how their structure at the nanoscale affects their functional behaviour — magnetic, electronic, optical or mechanical.

Our approach combines wet chemistry techniques with physical methods to fabricate nanomaterials suitable for diverse applications. We investigate their use in nanomedicine (e.g. drug delivery, imaging), energy (e.g. thermoelectric nanocomposites, water splitting catalysts), and information technologies (e.g. multiferroic thin films, ferrite-based devices).

A key aspect of our research is the study of nano–bio interactions. We assess how nanomaterials interact with biological systems and explore their biocompatibility and biodegradability, especially when targeting medical or environmental applications. This work is carried out in collaboration with hospitals, clinicians and other expert partners.

Through our projects and interdisciplinary expertise, we contribute to the development of sustainable, safe and efficient nanomaterials that can make a real difference. From basic research to early-stage validation, our work in nanomaterials spans the full spectrum of scientific exploration and innovation.
