Happy birthday to Anna Roig

Anna Roig with her presents from the NN group

Yesterday, May 2nd, was Anna Roig’s Birthday!
The members of the N&N group prepared her a small surprise party in the ICMAB terrace and gave her a beautiful orchid and a card.
Happy Birthday Anna! 😀

Anna Laromaine has been invited to the Leibniz Research Institute for Environmental Medicine to give a seminar on “Evaluation of inorganic nanoparticles in C. elegans”

On May 2nd Anna Laromaine was invited by Prof. Ventura Lab to give a talk in their facilities. The Group of Natascia Ventura uses C. elegans as a screening tool to unravel molecular mechanisms of mitochondrial-stress, with special attention paid to the cross-talk between genetic and environmental interventions.

The seminar will take place in the IUF Leibniz Research Institute for Environmental Medicine in Düsseldorf, Germany and will be sponsored by EMBO. Anna Laromaine will talk about her experiments in the evaluation of inorganic nanoparticles using the model organism C.elegans.

Enjoy your visit to Düsseldorf Anna!

Anna May and Anna Laromaine participate in the festival 10alamenos9

Yesterday (26th April 2017) two members of the N&N Group actively participated in a science outreach festival called 10alamenos9: Nanoscience and Nanotechnology Festival!

The aim of this event is to bring nanotechnology closer to society. It is addressed to people of all ages and educational backgrounds and takes place in different cities in Spain.

In Barcelona, Anna May participated in an interactive seminar that took place in the science museum CosmoCaixa. She showed some of the materials synthesized at ICMAB.

Miquel Torras receives two Sant Jordi prices for his bachelor’s thesis

Miquel Torras from the NN group at the ceremony for the Sant Jordi 2017 awards

As we announced before, on Friday 21st of April Miquel Torras received his Sant Jordi Price 2017 at the IEC: Institut d’Estudis Catalans.
The ceremony took place at the Prat de la Riba hall with the presence of  Joandomènec Ros, president of the IEC, Jana Balacciu winner of the international price Catalònia and Carme Forcadell the president of the Catalan Parliment.

Miquel received two prices: one from the Catalan Society of Chemistry and a recognition from the Catalan Society of Physics.

Here Miquel says a word of thanks to the IEC and those how supported his work:

Congratualtions again for your good job Miquel!

The Lab of the Nano Brothers: Mannequin Challenge of the N&N Group

On the occasion of the ICMAB party 2017, a photo contest has been ogranized: FOTICMAB 2017. In addition to the traditional photographic categories: ARTISTIC, SCIENTIFIC and PETS… This year there is a new category: MANNEQUIN CHALLENGE!

The N&N group, together with the Crystallography group, decided to participate in this new format and here you can see the result!

We thank Anna May for the video edition and Guillermo de Andrés for recording it.

The inspiration for the title of our Mannequin Challenge came from the famous scene from the Marx Brothers movie Night at the Opera

Anna Roig will attend the Spring Meeting of the Materials Research Society in Phoenix

From 17th to 21th of April, Phoenix will host the Spring Meeting and Exhibit of the Materials Research Society (MRS). In this huge congress the following topics will be addressed:

  • Characterization, Theory and Modeling
  • Electronic Devices and Materials
  • Energy Storage and Conversion
  • Nanomaterials
  • Soft Materials and Biomaterials

Anna Roig is invited to give a talk named:

The N&N group has a great expertise in producing and characterizing bacterial cellulose, and in creating multiple nanocomposites based on this biopolymer. The group will also be represented by Anna Roig with two more oral communications:

Phoenix is the capital city of Arizona (USA) and it is also called “The Valley of the Sun”

Cosmin, welcome to the N&N group!

This week we welcome Cosmin Cotet. He has already been in the N&N group before, but he likes it so much that he is back with us!
Cosmin sends a message to all of us:

Hi!
My name is Cosmin Cotet and I am a researcher from Babes-Bolyai University, Romania, who will work for two months in the N&N group in the field of nanoporous carbon materials!

Cosmin will work with Anna Roig and he is interested in applying his nanoporous carbon materials in sensors.
Have fun in the group Cosmin. Receive a warm welcome from all of us :)

Laura González: From ICMAB to StartUp Nano

After 4 years at the ICMAB, Laura is going to Braga (Portugal) to work in the start-up Best Health, within the StartUp Nano initiative to participate in its Acceleration program. She will spend there the next three months and will learn about business plans implementation. Laura received the funding for this internship through the BoosterWe program.

Laura received a guide from Portugal, a notebook and a postcard as a farewell present from the N&N group. Good luck with your new adventure Laura!

Anna May, the new Communication & Outreach Officer of ICMAB, also received a greeting card and a briefcase for her new job. We wish her a big success in science communication!
