On January 29, Anna Laromaine and Amanda Muñoz attended the Second BAR Meeting about C. elegans. Barcelona-based community of experts on the small worm met in the Bocconcino bar to talk about their research and experience in an informal setting.
On Monday, July 16, 2018, the first ICMAB-CRAG meeting took place at CRAG. The goal of this meeting was to promote new collaborations among researchers from the ICMAB and the CRAG.
Anna Laromaine, who already collaborates with CRAG with the project “Plant nano-healing“, gave an overview about the C.elegans and the bacterial cellulose research lines in the N&N group. Later, Anna Roig presented the library of nanoparticles and its diverse applications that the N&N group has developed in the recent years.
Anna Laromaine gave an invited lecture at the Congreso Anual de Biotecnologia (BioBAC) that took place in Girona the last 11th-13th July of 2018. She gave an overview of our activities in the biotechnology field with special focus on the research related with bacterial cellulose. It was very encouraging to see the interested and motivated students which participated at the conference.
PLANT HEALING, a project lead by Dr. Anna Laromaine from the Group Nanoparticles and Nanocomposites at the Institut of Materials Science in Barcelona (ICMAB) and in collaboration with the Group of Bacterial pathogens and plant cell death from the Center for Research in Agricultural Genomics (CRAG), was awarded by Els Fons Europeus de Desenvolupament Regional i el Departament d’Empresa i Coneixement de la Generalitat de Catalunya with a grant of 20.000€. The PLANT HEALING 2016 LLAVOR 00052 project will work to offer a novel material that could be implemented in current grafting protocols with no extra time or effort to significantly improve graft efficiency. PLANT HEALING will make an agricultural breakthrough, by developing a new nanocomposite material containing silver nanoparticles linked to bacterial nanocellulose.

Com a antiga alumna de l’institut, ha presentat la investigació del grup N&N. També els ha animat a treballar per ser el que vulguin ser i fer realitat el títol de la xerrada: De l’INS Cassà to theworld!
Beginning of July was a very busy week for Anna Laromaine! She was invited to two conferences as speaker. fisrt at the VIII International Congress on AnalyticalNanoscience and Nanotechnology(NyNA) 2017 held at the CasaConvalescencia in Barcelona from 3-5th of July. Then, from the 6-7th of July, she was invited at the VII Iberian Meeting on Colloids and Interfaces (RICI7) in Madrid. Anna Laromaine’s talks were related to our work on the use of bacterial cellulose and their composites with nanoparticles which were attended with great interest from the audience.
On 21st of June of 2017 in Madrid, the list of the most influential women talents of Spain was published by the association Mujeres & Cía. This list includes athletes, businesswomen, politicians, journalists, and a researcher from the N&N group: Anna Laromaine!
Anna Laromaine has been selected as a candidate for being named as one of the Top100 female leaders in Spain in the category of researchers and academics. The voting is already closed and the results will be announced on the 21st of June 2017 in Madrid. In this gala, 10 women will be priced for each different category. The event is organized by MujeresyCia and is aimed at making female talent visible.
Abstract: Understanding the in vivo fate and transport of nanoparticles (NPs) is challenging, but critical. We review recent studies of metal and metal oxide NPs using the model organism Caenorhabditis elegans, summarizing major findings to date. In a joint transdisciplinary effort, we highlight underutilized opportunities offered by powerful techniques lying at the intersection of mechanistic toxicology and materials science. To this end, we firstly summarize the influence of exposure conditions (media, duration, C. elegans lifestage) and NP physicochemical properties (size, coating, composition) on the response of the worm to NP treatment.
Next, we focus on the techniques employed to study NP entrance route, uptake, biodistribution and fate, emphasizing the potential of extending the toolkit available with novel and powerful techniques. Next, we review findings on several NP-induced biological responses, namely transport routes and altered molecular pathways, and illustrate the molecular biology and genetic strategies applied, critically reviewing their strengths and weaknesses.
Finally, we advocate the incorporation of a set of minimal materials and toxicological science experiments that will permit meta-analysis and synthesis of multiple studies in the future. We believe this review will facilitate coordinated integration of both well-established and underutilized approaches in mechanistic toxicology and materials science by the nanomaterials research community
