Anna Roig participates in the 11th Collaborative Day of Lyonbiopôle

Anna Roig participated in the 11th Collaborative Day of Lyonbiopôle organized by Lyonbiopôle, with the support of Biocat.

This 11th Collaborative Day where Anna participated aims at promoting R&D partnerships and catalyze the emergence of new tools for the prevention, diagnosis and treatment of pathologies. The day gives a framework to discuss the major challenges in the medical field, technological & scientific advances and to design partnerships and innovation projects to improve the management of diseases. This year more than 300 participants were registered.

In the morning, thematic roundtables took place, gathering around 20 persons each one from SMEs, research, industry, hospitals to brainstorm. The purpose of these is to support emergence of discussions and potential ideas of collaborations. A dedicated brainstorm methodology to stir the discussion is used. Anna Roig chaired the round table TR14: Use of nanoparticles in targeted therapies: what added value?

In the afternoon, blue sky meetings gave the opportunity to 10 SMEs to present their innovative technology looking for strategic collaborations and 10 project leaders to present their R&D project idea looking for partners.

Anna Roig receives the Albus Award for her project on “Albumin iron-oxide nanocages”

On Tuesday 3rd October, Anna Roig received the Albus Award 2017, by Grifols, to develop a project on “Albumin iron-oxide nanocages”. The Awards Ceremony took place at the Grifols Museum, which is located in the same building where the Grifols company started their activities, in 1940. Every year, the Albus Program gives two Albus Awards of 50,000 € to the best two innovative ideas related to albumin and its role as a therapeutic product. The project proposals are assessed by independent reviewers. In this year’s edition, the two award recipients were Anna Roig and Dr. Karl Oettl, from the Medical University of Graz (Austria).

Anna Roig gets an Albus Grifols Scientific Award!

Good news!

Anna Roig has been awarded with the Albus Award 2017, one of the Scientific Awards offered by Grifols, the pharmaceutical and chemical multinational company. The Award consists of 50,000 € to carry out the project “Albumin-iron oxide nanocages”.

The Albus Program is an annual international award focused on innovative ideas related to albumin and its role as a therapeutic product. The Program offers two awards of 50,000 € each year. The proposals are assessed by an independent review committee formed by world-wide recognized experts.

Anna’s “Albumin-iron oxide nanocages” project gets inspiration from the apoferritin nanoconstructs. It aims at investigating if albumin nanocages, consisting of a few units of albumin self-assembled and self-standing, can be formed by using inorganic iron oxide nanoparticles as semi-sacrificial templates. The albumin nanocages could then find application as a nanomedicinal product for imaging and drug delivery.

The winners will be given their Awards at a Ceremony that will take place on October 3rd, 2017 in Barcelona.

Two Frontier Interdisciplinary Projects for the N&N group!

On the 19th of July of 2017, the second internal call of the Frontier Interdisciplinary Projects (FIP) within the FUNMAT Severo Ochoa program was resolved with very good news for the N&N group! Two researcher from the group, Anna Roig and Martí Gich, will participate in two of the eight awarded projects:

Anna Roig, invited speaker at the Moscow International Symposium on Magnetism

Last 3rd of July 2017, Anna Roig delivered the invited contribution “In-vitro and in-vivo screening of magnetic nanoparticles” at the Moscow International Symposium on Magnetism (MISM-2017). MISM Symposium is held every three years and it takes place at the Lomonosov Moscow State University. More the 1000 participants attended this edition where the communications addressed all aspects of magnetism. Anna Roig’s talk was included in the topic: Magnetism in Biology and Medicine.

Hot off the press: New accepted paper in Materials Horizons!

Good news for the N&N group! 🙂
The paper entitled: Materials and toxicological approaches to study metal and metal-oxide nanoparticles in the model organism Caenorhabditis elegans has been accepted in the journal Materials Horizons.
We congratulate the authors from the N&N group: Laura Gonzalez-Moragas, Anna Roig and Anna Laromaine. Also our collaborators Laura L. Maurer, Victoria M. Harms and Joel Meyer from the U.S.A.

Abstract:
Understanding the in vivo fate and transport of nanoparticles (NPs) is challenging, but critical. We review recent studies of metal and metal oxide NPs using the model organism Caenorhabditis elegans, summarizing major findings to date.
In a joint transdisciplinary effort, we highlight underutilized opportunities offered by powerful techniques lying at the intersection of mechanistic toxicology and materials science. To this end, we firstly summarize the influence of exposure conditions (media, duration, C. elegans lifestage) and NP physicochemical properties (size, coating, composition) on the response of the worm to NP treatment.
Next, we focus on the techniques employed to study NP entrance route, uptake, biodistribution and fate, emphasizing the potential of extending the toolkit available with novel and powerful techniques. Next, we review findings on several NP-induced biological responses, namely transport routes and altered molecular pathways, and illustrate the molecular biology and genetic strategies applied, critically reviewing their strengths and weaknesses.
Finally, we advocate the incorporation of a set of minimal materials and toxicological science experiments that will permit meta-analysis and synthesis of multiple studies in the future. We believe this review will facilitate coordinated integration of both well-established and underutilized approaches in mechanistic toxicology and materials science by the nanomaterials research community

Anna Roig will attend the Spring Meeting of the Materials Research Society in Phoenix

The N&N group has a great expertise in producing and characterizing bacterial cellulose, and in creating multiple nanocomposites based on this biopolymer. The group will also be represented by Anna Roig with two more oral communications:

Anna Roig will participate this Monday 13th March in a Ph.D. Thesis Committee at Universiat Jaume I in Castelló de la Plana (País Valencià).

The thesis, written by Francisco Gonell Gómez, is entitled “Design of new nanomaterials for their use in catalysis and photochemistry”.

The Ph.D. Supervisors are Beatriz Julián López, Tenure Professore of Inorganic Chemistry at Universitat Jaume I, and Avelino Corma Canós, Research Professor at Institute of Chemical Technology (ITQ-CSIC).

Welcome to Olatz in the NN Group, and farewell to Dani and Valentin

In this week’s Group Meeting we welcomed Olatz Arriaga, an undergraduate student from the Basque Country. Olatz is studying “Nanoscience and Nanotechnology” at the Universitat Autònoma de Barcelona (UAB), and will do her Final Bachelor’s Project under the supervision of Anna Roig, working in the synthesis of gold and titanium oxide nanoparticles.

We also said goodbye to Dani Beltran and Valentin Natarov, who are leaving this week the ICMAB. Dani will continue his Master in Biomedical Engineering at UB-UPC, and Valentin will go back to Belarus to continue his Master in Chemistry at Belarusian State University.

They both gave a very nice presentation on the work they have been doing in our group, about stabilizing non-stable polymorphs in mesoporous silica, and synthesizing iron oxide and silica nanocomposites for biomedical applications, under the supervision of Martí Gich and Anna Roig.
