Pol has been accepted to an International Master Course in Materials for Energy Storage and Conversion

pol-farewellToday is Pol’s last day in the N&N Group. In the group meeting we gave him a little present and he brought some delicious pastries from his hometown, Manresa.

We will miss him, but we are happy that he has been accepted to the International Master in Materials for Energy Storage and Conversion (MESC) with an Erasmus Mundus scholarship.

This Master is a 2-years education program in the field of Energy-related Materials. During the first year, Pol will study in Toulouse (France) and in Warsaw (Poland); and in the second year in Córdoba (Spain). The last semester is dedicated to an internship. After successful completion of the curriculum, Pol will graduate with a multiple Master degree awarded by all universities of the consortium and recognised in each of the countries visited.

Lab Cleaning day in the N&N Group!

Irene, Laura, Iván, Pol and Jordi organizing the chemicals and the disposable material.

Today, Wednesday 13th July, was the day for the lab cleaning! All the group participated in the lab cleaning, and everyone was willing to cooperate and help in the cleaning tasks.

Who would miss the day we spend every three months organizing drawers of forgotten equipment, cleaning the hoods with different solvents trying to remove the stains, and updating long lists of reactives and lab material?!

Thank you to everyone! And a big thank you to Pol Sallés, who has been lab manager for the last 3 months and has organized today’s lab cleaning!

Anna and Teresa cleaning the refrigerator, and Judit and Qianzhe updating the security cabinet chemicals list.
Deyaa, Adrià and Ander disposing the old waste and organizing the new waste containers and labels.
Mònica and Laura updating the solvent list and cleaning the fume hood.

Welcome to Teresa Soto in the N&N Group

teresaTeresa Soto is in High School (Institut Pere Calders, Bellaterra) and she will stay with us this summer for an Internship as part of her Research Project (Treball de Recerca) under the supervision of Anna Laromaine. She will work with different kinds of paper, cellulose and silk to discover the differences and similarities between them.

Welcome and we hope you enjoy this summer with us!

N&N Group trip at Paper Museum and Archaeological Site in Capellades

Abric RomaníLast Friday, July 1st, the N&N Group did a Group Trip to visit the Paper Museum in Capellades (Museu Molí Paperer), and the Archaeological Site nearby (Abric Romaní).

As the Group is working with bacterial cellulose, we wanted to see how another type of paper was made and learn about the history of paper makers in Capellades. Victòria Rabal, director of the museum, guided us around the museum and taught us how to make some paper. And we did some!

On the other hand, the archaeologist Raül Bartrolí, explained us many things about the Neanderthals, and showed us some of the objects found in this unique archaeological site (see image), full of animal bones and flint tools (sílex).

We finished the trip with a picnic in the park, and a farewell to Sebastià Parets, as it was his last day with us!

All in all, a very nice and fruitful trip!

JPHD2016-PhD meetingJune 29th-30th are devoted to the “2nd Scientific Meeting of BNC-b Students”, which will take place at the Sala d’Actes of the Facultat de Ciències i Biociències (UAB). The meeting is aimed to present the work done by the PhD students of the Barcelona Nanotechnology Cluster – Bellaterra (ICMAB, ICN2, IMB-CNM, UAB, ALBA), promoting networking among all the students in an academic and scientific environment.

The N&N group will have a large participation in the event, both from PhD students and Master and Undergraduate students:

  • Laura González (PhD student) will give a talk on “Evaluation of Inorganic nanoparticles in the model organism C. elegans(Session 2, June 29th, 12.15 h).
  • The following posters will be presented (Poster sessions: June 29th 10.45-12.00 h; June 30th 10.30-11.15 h):
    • Adsorption of toxic metal ions onto magnetic graphene oxide (Iván Gómez, Visiting PhD student)
    • Encapsulating endothelial progenitor cell’s secretome for vascular remodeling therapies (Irene Anton, Master student)
    • Magneto-plasmonic multimaterial nanoparticles (Miquel Torras and Adrià Gordillo, Undergraduate students)
    • Production of bacterial nano-cellulose as a terrific natural polymer (Deyaa Youssef, Visiting PhD student)

The N&N Group participates in the Nano Festival at the Campus UAB

ICMAB workshopThe N&N Group has collaborated in the first science outreach festival of Nanoscience and Nanotechnology. This festival, held between April 4th-8th 2016 in different locations of the Spanish geography (Zaragoza, Donostia, Barcelona, and Campus UAB) is full of different activities: seminars, exhibitions, workshops, nanodebates and competitions.

Anna May and Pol Sallés participated in the workshop around “Nanomaterials at ICMAB“, in which different nanomaterials created by ICMAB were shown and the role of nanotechnology in our daily life products was discussed. The assistants were mainly students from the UAB (Nanoscience and Nanotechnology, Biotechnology, etc.), but also high school students interested in pursuing a Nanoscience degree were present. Tomorrow, Tuesday 5th April, Anna Laromaine will give a talk on Nanomedicine (Sala d’Actes, Facultat de Ciències, 10.30 – 13 h) and the workshop will also be held at the C1 Hall of the Facultat de Ciències (13 – 15 h).
