Last week, our group members Luo Zhongrui, Genís Rabost and Anna Laromaine worked on the beam line MIRAS at the synchrothron ALBA in collaboration with Núria Benseny. We visualized C. elegans by FTIR and analyzed their tissues. They also had the visit of a former group member Laura Gonzalez-Moragas, who started this research line.
In the weekly meeting of the N&N group we have incorporated a new activity: Journal Club!
A journal club is a group of individuals that meet regularly to critically evaluate literature, generally about a branch of science in which they are involved. The first person to formally establish a journal club was sir William Osler (a medical doctor) in 1875 who stated that his journal clubs were “for the purchase and distribution of periodicals to which we could not afford to subscribe”. Now journal clubs have evolved and extended to others disciplines and there are also on line journal clubs. So, what can we learn from journal clubs? The main objective is to learn to be critical with the papers that we read and to exchange our opinions with our colleagues. Journal clubs also help us to be up to date in the scientific development.
So far, Qianzhe and Irene have presented two different papers (on the above image). The presentations of the papers have been followed by very enriching debates.
Congratulations to the Nanoscience and Nanotechnology student Jordi Floriach-Clark and his supervisor Dr. Anna Laromaine Sagué for the excellent Treball de Final de Grau (Bachelor Degree Thesis). The work was on the use of bacterial cellulose for treatments in plants: “Bacterial Cellulose and its Nanocomposites for Applications in Regeneration and Infection Control in Plants.” and was awarded with excellent and distinction by the jury.
From the 3rd to the 8th of September of 2017 Irene Anton, a Ph.D. student from the N&N group, attended a big meeting of Colloids and Interfaces in Madrid (ECIS2017). The event was hosted by the UniversidadComplutense de Madrid. Irene participated with two posters and was awarded with one of the two prizes sponsored by the journal Polymers.
Testing nanocellulose as biomaterial for epithelial regeneration
Encapsulating endothelial progenitor cells’ secretome into magnetic nanocapsules for targeted angiogenic therapies
Jan Grzelak defended his Master thesis at the University of Warsaw on the 27th of July 2017. His supervisors Anna Laromaine and Martí Gich came to Poland for the defence.
Jan was enrolled in a Master’s in Nanostructure Engineering and the title of the thesis was ‘Synthesis of supports for catalysis with palladium nanoparticles templated by bacterial cellulose’.
He got the highest mark (excellent) for the defence and the final mark from the whole studies was 4.88/5. He will receive a diploma with distinction! Next academic year Jan will be back to the N&N group to do his PhD with a grant from La Caixa.
Thursday 22nd of June of 2017 was the last day of the first edition of the Scientific School on Materials for Biomedical Applications organized by ICMAB (MATBIO2017). A large number of local and international students attended the school and participated actively on the debates, the science dating and the hands-on sessions. Almost all the participants would repeat this experience according to the surveys.
On the 12th of June 2017, Prof. Prof. OritShefi (picture, right) was invited by the N&N groups to give an ICMAB periodical lecture entitled: “Nano-based platforms for controlling neuronal organization and growth” Prof OritShefi comes from the Bar-Ilan Institute of Nanotechnology and Advanced Materials in Israel. She has a large expertise in manipulating neuronal growth and differentiation using substrates with controlled nano-structures. All the N&N group members attended and enjoyed the talk! 🙂
On May 10th, three bio-medical engineering students form the University of Vicvisited ICMAB and its facilities. They are Laura Gonzalez students of the bio-materials course. Sole and Irene showed them the crystallography lab and other ICMAB facilities: NANOQUIM, electron microscopes among others. After that, several members of the N&N group gave a talk explaining to the students which are our main research lines.
Anna Roig (May 8th 2017) and Anna Laromaine (May 15th 2017) will also participate in this biomaterial course by giving two seminars in the University of Vic.
