31st Anniversary of ICMAB and… party!

It is a tradition to celebrate each spring the anniversary of ICMAB. On the 5th of May 2017 we all celebrated the 31st anniversary of our research centre with a party in the institute for all its members. There were many activities organized for this day: gymkhana, Poker, chess, Party&Co., 3D holograms workshop, swing class and exhibition, photo-call, and even a Ping-Pong tournament. All these activities were accompanied by food and drinks and there were prices for the winners in each category.

We congratulate the winners of the gymkhana which were all members of the N&N group(above picture): Sole, Jordi, Olatz and Luo!

Happy birthday ICMAB!

Happy birthday to Anna Roig

Anna Roig with her presents from the NN group

Yesterday, May 2nd, was Anna Roig’s Birthday!
The members of the N&N group prepared her a small surprise party in the ICMAB terrace and gave her a beautiful orchid and a card.
Happy Birthday Anna! 😀

Anna Laromaine has been invited to the Leibniz Research Institute for Environmental Medicine to give a seminar on “Evaluation of inorganic nanoparticles in C. elegans”

On May 2nd Anna Laromaine was invited by Prof. Ventura Lab to give a talk in their facilities. The Group of Natascia Ventura uses C. elegans as a screening tool to unravel molecular mechanisms of mitochondrial-stress, with special attention paid to the cross-talk between genetic and environmental interventions.

The seminar will take place in the IUF Leibniz Research Institute for Environmental Medicine in Düsseldorf, Germany and will be sponsored by EMBO. Anna Laromaine will talk about her experiments in the evaluation of inorganic nanoparticles using the model organism C.elegans.

Enjoy your visit to Düsseldorf Anna!

The Lab of the Nano Brothers: Mannequin Challenge of the N&N Group

On the occasion of the ICMAB party 2017, a photo contest has been ogranized: FOTICMAB 2017. In addition to the traditional photographic categories: ARTISTIC, SCIENTIFIC and PETS… This year there is a new category: MANNEQUIN CHALLENGE!

The N&N group, together with the Crystallography group, decided to participate in this new format and here you can see the result!

We thank Anna May for the video edition and Guillermo de Andrés for recording it.

The inspiration for the title of our Mannequin Challenge came from the famous scene from the Marx Brothers movie Night at the Opera

Anna May Masnou is the new Communication & Outreach Officer at ICMAB

Anna May, postdoc in our group, is from now on the new Communication & Outreach Officer at ICMAB. Anna holds a PhD in Materials Science and Technology and is currently studying a postgraduate course in Science Communication.

Nothing in science has any value to society if it is not communicated, and scientists are beginning to learn their social obligations. — Anne Roe (The Making of a Scientist (1953), 17)

We wish her all the luck in this new endeavour!

Anna Roig will participate this Monday 13th March in a Ph.D. Thesis Committee at Universiat Jaume I in Castelló de la Plana (País Valencià).

The thesis, written by Francisco Gonell Gómez, is entitled “Design of new nanomaterials for their use in catalysis and photochemistry”

The Ph.D. Supervisors are Beatriz Julián López, Tenure Professore of Inorganic Chemistry at Universitat Jaume I, and Avelino Corma Canós, Research Professor at Institute of Chemical Technology (ITQ-CSIC).

新年快乐! Happy Chinese New Year! We start now the year of the Rooster!

Today (January 27) is Chinese New Year’s Eve (除夕), and as we have many Chinese people at ICMAB, and in our group, we wanted to celebrate it!

Qianzhe, Ma, Yajie and Luo are very happy; it is a big feast in their country! But, unfortunately, they will have to work during the Chinese holidays…

Each year, in Chinese astrology, is associated with an animal sign. From tomorrow (January 28), Chinese New Year’s day (初一), it will be a Rooster year. There are 12 animals in the Chinese zodiac cycle, and the Rooster is the 10th of it, after Monkey and before Dog.

In addition, each year is not just associated with an animal sign, but also with one of the five following elements: Gold (Metal), Wood, Water, Fire, or Earth. In this case, we will start a Fire Rooster year!

Are you a Rooster? You can check it out in this fantastic webpage, where you will also find more information about the Fire Rooster year.

We wish everybody a Happy Chinese New Year!
