COMMON SENSE RESULTS: First test of the newly developed heavy metal sensors for Cd and Pb in natural sea water samples

alt

This first test using natural Mediterranean seawater has shown that the method and electrodes worked correctly.

Studies were done at the Institut de Ciències del Mar (ICM-CSIC) in the Aquaria and Experimental Chambers (ZAE) facilities.

The water salinity of the samples was ~38, that is, nearly the highest values (40) that can be found in open seas worldwide. Neither “recent” nor “old” seawater analysed showed significant values of Cd and Pb. However, Cu was detected in the “old” seawater. These results are in accordance to the periodic control analyses carried out in the ZAE.

NN Group offers three projects under the framework of Marie Sklodowska- Curie Individual Fellowships

Marie Sklodowska- Curie Individual Fellowship (Call MSCA IF 2015) is open offering multiple opportunities to experienced researchers to return and reintegrate in Europe.

There are 8 scientific areas established for MSCA. Our group offers 3 interdisciplinar projects under this framework (see attachments)

1.Field of PHYSICS, Optoelectronics in room-temperature multiferroic iron oxide.

2. Field of CHEMISTRY, Engineering novel magnetic nano-biomaterials to address tissue repair guided by angiogenesis.

3.Field of LIFE SCIENCE, Assessing nanoparticles in 3D biological environments, from cell culture to C. elegans.

First images of human endothelial progenitor cells (EPC) obtained at synchrotron ALBA

Researchers from the VHIR and our group obtained first images of human endothelial progenitor cells by Transmission Soft X-ray Microscopy at ALBA Synchrotron.

The experiment, performed at the MISTRAL beamline leaded by Dr. Eva Pereiro, allowed us to image whole Endothelial Progenitor Cells (EPC) containing iron oxide nanoparticles by perfoming X-ray cryo-tomography

The experiment was undertaken by Estela Serra, Anna Laromaine and Anna Roig from our group and Anna Rosell from the Neurovascular Research Laboratory, Institut de Recerca Hospital Vall d’Hebron (VHIR).

Project funded by the Plan Nacional de Investigación Científica!

Our application to the Fundamental Research Projects of the Spanish VI “Plan Nacional de Investigación Científica, Desarrollo e Innovación Tecnológica” with the project “Advanced preparation techniques for nanoparticles and their biomedical and environmental assessment (AdvancedNP)” has been funded.

We are very happy given the strong competition of the call due to the budgetary cuts.

New Cost Action

The group participates in the recently approved COST Action
