Welcome to the postdoc Carles Moya

New year and new members at the N&N group! Today we introduce our postdoctoral fellow Carles Moya:

I obtained my Bs.C. in Chemistry in 2008 at the Universitat de Barcelona. After that, I studied a Master degree at the same University. During my research I focused on the synthesis of bio-organometallic compounds under the supervision of prof. Concepcion Lopez. Then I joined to Magnetic Nanomaterials group under the supervision of prof. Amilcar Labarta where I developed new chemical routes to obtain magnetic Nanoparticles based on iron oxides. Their magnetic properties were also  studied and correlated to their structural properties. After my PhD I took a postdoctoral position at the University of Carnegie Mellon where I worked in  prof. Sara Majetich’s group. In Pittsburgh, I focused on the study of the magnetic and structural properties of assemblies of single-crystal cube-shaped and spherical Fe3ONanoparticles obtained from high temperature decomposition method.  During this period I acquire a wide array of skills related to performing research in nanotechnology. These skills include synthesis of nanomaterials by chemistry methods, preparation of nanoparticle assemblies, surface functionalization, structural and magnetic characterization among others. Recently I joined to Nanoparticles and Nanocomposites group with a Grifolls grant. Here I am going to study albumin nanocages using iron oxide Nanoparticles as a template. In addition, I am going to focus on the potential biomedical applications of those structures such as MRI contrast agents and drug delivery.

Hope you enjoy your time at the N&N group Carlos!

Welcome Genís and Albert

The N&N group keeps growing! This term we welcome two new master students, both of them will be funded by a Severo Ochoa Collaborative Scholarship

Genís Rabost

My name is Genís Rabost and I am from Sant Antoni de Vilamajor (Barcelona). Currently, I am studying a Biomedical Engineering Master’s Degree in UB-UPC. Thanks to the Severo Ochoa collaboration scholarship, I will be working in the N&N group for five months under the supervision of Anna Laromaine. My project is focused on the study of the interaction between nanoparticles and C. Elegans.

Albert Serra

My name is Albert Serra and I will be staying for five months at ICMAB thanks to a Severo Ochoa collaboration scholarship from CSIC. During this period of time I will be working on the development of thin film carbon microelectrodes for the analysis of arsenic in water, under the supervision of Dr. Martí Gich.

Welcome to Michaela and Gustavo!

As the new academic course starts, we have new members in the N&N group: We welcome Michaela and Gustavo!

  • Michaela comes from the Czech Republic and she is going to work with Marti Gich for a short period:

I am going to study study epsilon-Fe2O3 in detail: its synthesis, properties, and applications. In the laboratory, I am going to study sol-gel process for preparation of iron oxide nanoparticles. Afterwards, the nanoparticles will be characterized by different techniques to examine their composition, structure and magnetic properties.

  • Gustavo is a permanent researcher of CONICET, Argentina. He will be at the ICMAB for a year in N&N group thanks to a grant from the Argentine government.

My current scientific interests are focused on  magnetic colloids, dipolar interactions between particles and effects of liquid matrix solidification on the final distribution of nanoparticles as well as distribution of their anisotropy orientations. I am also interested on magnetic systems relevant to potential applications in medicine. In particular, heat dissipation for magnetic hyperthermia and magnetic induced transport for magnetofection gene therapy. At the N&N group, I will work on the synthesis and characterization of anisotropic magnetic nanoparticles as generators of magnetomechanical stimuli inside cancer cells as a new way to induce apoptotic cell death. We will work in performing insitu observation by optical microscopy of magnetic-microparticles movements induced by rotating magnetic fields.

We hope you enjoy your time at the N&N group!

Jordi Floriach-Clark awarded excellent with distinction for his Bachelor’s thesis

Congratulations to the Nanoscience and Nanotechnology student Jordi Floriach-Clark and his supervisor Dr. Anna Laromaine Sagué for the excellent Treball de Final de Grau (Bachelor Degree Thesis). The work was on the use of bacterial cellulose for treatments in plants: “Bacterial Cellulose and its Nanocomposites for Applications in Regeneration and Infection Control in Plants.” and was awarded with excellent and distinction by the jury.

Good job Jordi and Anna!

Marcela, welcome (back) to the N&N group!

Marcela, a collaborator of the N&N group, arrived the 15th May 2017 to ICMAB and will stay with us for a short time. Here a few words about her work:

“Hello, I am Marcela B. Fernández van Raap from the Instituto de Fisica de La Plata (IFLP), Argentina. I have joined Anna Roig’s group for a 18 day visit. My research interests are mainly focused on the synthesis and development of new nanomediators and nanocarriers for biomedical applications like magnetic hyperthermia, drug delivery and tissue repair.”

We wish Marcela a happy stay in the N&N group! 🙂

Marcela comes from the Instituto de Fisica de La Plata (IFLP), Argentina

Cosmin, welcome to the N&N group!

This week we welcome Cosmin Cotet. He has already been in the N&N group before, but he likes it so much that he is back with us!
Cosmin sends a message to all of us:

Hi!
My name is Cosmin Cotet and I am a researcher from Babes-Bolyai University, Romania, who will work for two months in the N&N group in the field of nanoporous carbon materials!

Cosmin will work with Anna Roig and he is interested in applying his nanoporous carbon materials in sensors.
Have fun in the group Cosmin. Receive a warm welcome from all of us :)

Laura González: From ICMAB to StartUp Nano

After 4 years at the ICMAB, Laura is going to Braga (Portugal) to work in the start-up Best Health, within the StartUp Nano initiative to participate in its Acceleration program. She will spend there the next three months and will learn about business plans implementation. Laura received the funding for this internship through the BoosterWe program.

Laura received a guide from Portugal, a notebook and a postcard as a farewell present from the N&N group. Good luck with your new adventure Laura!

Anna May, the new Communication & Outreach Officer of ICMAB, also received a greeting card and a briefcase for her new job. We wish her a big success in science communication!

Welcome to Olatz in the NN Group, and farewell to Dani and Valentin

In this week’s Group Meeting we welcomed Olatz Arriaga, an undergraduate student from the Basque Country. Olatz is studying “Nanoscience and Nanotechnology” at the Universitat Autònoma de Barcelona (UAB), and will do her Final Bachelor’s Project under the supervision of Anna Roig, working in the synthesis of gold and titanium oxide nanoparticles.

We also said goodbye to Dani Beltran and Valentin Natarov, who are leaving this week the ICMAB. Dani will continue his Master in Biomedical Engineering at UB-UPC, and Valentin will go back to Belarus to continue his Master in Chemistry at Belarusian State University.

They both gave a very nice presentation on the work they have been doing in our group, about stabilizing non-stable polymorphs in mesoporous silica, and synthesizing iron oxide and silica nanocomposites for biomedical applications, under the supervision of Martí Gich and Anna Roig

We welcome Valentin Natarov into the NN group!

We welcome Valentin Natarov into the NN group!
