Farewell to Jana and welcome to Iván and Deyaa – Group Lunch and Lab Cleaning Day

IMG_20160401_132834-groupThis Friday, after the Lab Cleaning (good job!) we had a N&N Group Lunch to say goodbye to Jana, who did a fantastic job at ICMAB and now is going back to ETH Zurich, and to welcome the two new visiting Ph.D. students, Deyaa, from Egypt, and Iván, from Colombia.

There were 15 of us today! The group always gets big in spring time with all the new students!

Welcome to Iván Gómez into the N&N Group

Foto_IvánIván Dario Gómez Robayo is a Ph.D. Student from the Universidad Industrial de Santander (Colombia). He is working on the synthesis of graphene, and uses it for absorption of contaminants in wastewater. Iván will stay with us for six months to functionalize the graphene with magnetic nanoparticles, as a way to separate it from the water flow.

Welcome to our group! We hope you enjoy your stay with us!

Welcome Deyaa into the N&N Group

Deyaa_March2016We welcome Deyaa Mohamed Abol Fotouh, who will join us as a Visiting Ph.D. Student for one year. Deyaa will be working on bacterial cellulose (BC) composite materials and will be supervised by Anna Laromaine and Anna Roig.

So far, Deyaa has been working on optimizing the productivity of BC (temperature, culture medium, flask volume…) and on stabilizing the bacterial strains. He started his Ph.D. in the Advanced Technology and New Materials Institute (ATNMRI), in the City of Scientific Research and Technology Applications (SRTA-City), in Alexandria, Egypt.

Welcome, Deyaa!

Welcome back into the N&N group, Pol Sallés!

Pol_SallésPol Sallés was in the N&N group last year for his Degree’s Final Project (TFG). Now that he is already graduated in Nanoscience & Nanotechnology (UAB), he is back with us in the N&N Group for six months to do some research on microwave-assisted synthesis of nanocomposites. Welcome back, Pol! We hope you enjoy your stay at the ICMAB!

Welcome to Jana Segmehl in the N&N Group

JanaSegmehlWe welcome Jana Segmehl from ETH-Zurich, who will stay with us for 6 weeks for a Ph.D. Research Internship. Jana is working at the Wood Material Science Group, at the Institute for Building Materials, and her work focuses on multifunctional hierarchical cellulose scaffolds produced from native wood. The goal of her internship is to functionalize these cellulose scaffolds with different types of nanoparticles, such as iron oxide.

We  hope you enjoy your stay with us, Jana!

Welcome to new undergrad students in the N&N group

Today we welcome three undergrad students that will be part of the N&N group for the next 6 months to carry out their Bachelor’s Degree Final Project (Treball Final de Grau).
They are, from left to right in the image, Adrià Gordillo, Miquel Torras and Judit Fuentes. Adrià and Judit are studying Nanoscience and Nanotechnology, and Miquel is studying the double degree in Physics and Chemistry, all of them at the Universitat Autònoma de Barcelona (UAB).
Adrià and Miquel will be under the supervision of Anna Roig, and will be working with iron oxide nanotriangles. Judit will be under the supervision of Anna Laromaine and will be working with composite materials formed by bacterial cellulose and silver nanoparticles.
We hope they enjoy their stay with us!

Welcome to new Master students in the N&N group

Irene+Sebastià The beginning of the year is always time for new incorporations in the N&N group. This year we are pleased to welcome Irene Anton, master student in Biomedical Research (UPF), and Sebastià Parets, master student in Advanced Biotechnology (UAB). They will carry out their Master’s Thesis with us for the next 6 months. Sebastià will be under the supervision of Anna Laromaine, and working with bacterial cellulose; and Irene, under the supervision of Anna Roig, working with polymeric nanocapsules for biomedical applications. Welcome to both of them!
