Jan Grzelak obtained a Bachelor’s degree in Nanostructure Engineering at theUniversity of Warsaw (Poland). Then he started studying the Master program at the same university, also in Nanostructure Engineering. Now he is doing his second and last year of Master with an Erasmus program at the UAB, on Advanced Nanoscience and Nanotechnology.
Jan will join our N&N group atICMAB, and will be supervised by Martí Gich and Anna Laromaine. He will be working on alumina tubes with palladium nanoparticles, using bacterial cellulose as a template for the synthesis.
Miquel Torras, who was in the N&N Group during last semester to do his Degree’s Final Project, is back with us this year. He has started a MSc in Applied Materials Chemistry at Universitat de Barcelona (UB) and will do his MSc Thesis in the group, under the supervision of Anna Roig. He will be working on the synthesis and characterization of magnetic and plasmonic gold nanotriangles.
Today during the Group Meeting we welcomed the 5 new Ph.D. students that will start their Ph.D. thesis in the N&N Group! We hope you enjoy your stay with us!
Ma Zheng: BSc. Electronic Information Science and Technology at Taishan University (Taian, China) and MSc. Condensed Matter Physics at University of Electronic Science and Technology of China (UESTC, Chengdu, China). His Ph.D. thesis topic will be “Physics of ε-Fe2O3” supervised by Martí Gich.
Irene Anton: BSc.Biotechnology at Universitat de Barcelona and MSc. Biomedical Research at Universitat Pompeu Fabra. She will work on “Functionalized bacterial cellulose for skin tissue regeneration” with Anna Roig and Anna Laromaine.
Soledad Roig: BSc. Chemistry at Universidad de Valencia and MSc. Nanoscience, Materials and Processes at Universitat Rovira i Virgili (Research work at Northeastern University, USA). During her Ph.D. she will work on “Engineering bacterial cellulose nanocomposites” with Anna Roig and Anna Laromaine.
Yajie Zhang: BSc. Applied Chemistry at the Institute of Surface Micro and Nanomaerials at Xuchuang University (China) and MSc. Applied Chemistry in the Key Laboratory Marine Chemistry and Technology, at Ocean University of China, and will work on “Nanocapsules as drug delivery carriers for pro-angiogenic therapies” with Anna Roig and Anna Rosell (Vall d’Hebron Research Institute (VHIR)).
Zhongrui Luo: BSc. Bioengineering at Nanjing Agricultural University (China) and MSc. Applied Chemistry at Yunnan University (China). His Ph.D. research will be on “Assessment of nanoparticles toxicity using C. elegans as model organism”, with Anna Laromaine.
We welcome Dani Beltran, who will stay with us until February 2017. Dani Beltran already did his Final Degree Project in our group (Synthesis and crystallization of SiO2-GeO2 gels), supervised by Martí Gich, while he was studying Nanoscience and Nanotechnology at UAB. Now he is a M.Sc. student in Biomedical Engineering at UB-UPC and will work with us in a project of crystallization of metastable phases under negative pressures, also supervised by Martí Gich.
Welcome Dani! We hope you enjoy this stay with us!
Today during the group meeting we said goodbye toIván, who is leaving to continue his Ph.D. thesis in Colombia. Iván is a great chemist, who works with magnetic graphene for water decontamination. We wish him a lot of success in his thesis and in his future endeavours!
On the other hand, Esther Dalfo gave us a nice talk on biomedical applications of C. elegans “Investigating neurodegeneration by using the nematode Caenorhabditis elegans”. Esther is an Associate Researcher at the Institute of Neuroscience of the UAB, specialized in neurodegeneration and human genetics. Thank you!
Today is Pol’s last day in the N&N Group. In the group meeting we gave him a little present and he brought some delicious pastries from his hometown, Manresa.
This Master is a 2-years education program in the field of Energy-related Materials. During the first year, Pol will study in Toulouse (France) and in Warsaw (Poland); and in the second year in Córdoba (Spain). The last semester is dedicated to an internship. After successful completion of the curriculum, Pol will graduate with a multiple Master degree awarded by all universities of the consortium and recognised in each of the countries visited.
Congratulations and Farewell to our Master and Undergraduate students
Today we had a group pizza-lunch to congratulate our students for their Master and Undergraduate Research Projects, and to say goodbye to them: Sebastià Parets (M.S.), Irene Anton (M.S.), Judit Fuentes (Undergrad), Adrià Gordillo (Undergrad) and Miquel Torras (Undergrad).
The works they presented are the following:
Irene Anton: Encapsulating endothelial progenitor cells’ secretome into magnetic nanocapsules for targeted vascular remodelling (A. Roig and A. Rossell, 01/07/2016)
Miquel Torras: Magneto-plasmonic nanomaterials: gols nanotriangles decorated with superparamagnetic iron oxide nanoparticles (A. Roig, 05/07/2016)
Sebastià Parets: Production of spherical bacterial cellulose by Gluconacetobacterxylinum (A. Laromaine, 20/07/2016)
They all did a great job with us and it was very nice having them in the group. Good luck and more success on your new projects!
Do YOU want to join us for your undergraduate or master’s project? Look what others said about the experience!:
Miquel: “I learned a lot. The best of my experience was that I enjoyed this learning. I’m very grateful!”
Sebastià: “It has been an amazing experience with amazing people!”
Adrià: “It has been a wonderful semester working in an amazing group, where I have consolidated a lot of knowledge from the degree.”
Judit: “It has been an excellent experience here at ICMAB, if I could go back in time I would come here again! Thank everyone for making my stay here so nice. See you!”
In today’s group meeting, Laura Asturias presented her work on “Gold nanoparticles/carbon thin film sensors for the determination of mercury in seawater“. It was her last presentation within the N&N Group, since she is leaving next week! 🙁
After the talk, we gave her a farewell card and some presents. We will miss her, and from now on electrochemistry will always remind us to her.
Ander Arbide is a 3rd year Bachelor Student of “Nanoscience and Nanotechnology”, and he will stay with us for an Internship for two months. Ander will work under the supervision of Martí Gich, on heavy metal sensors based on carbon and metallic nanoparticles composites.
Welcome to our group, Ander! We hope you enjoy your stay with us!
Teresa Soto is in High School (Institut Pere Calders, Bellaterra) and she will stay with us this summer for an Internship as part of her Research Project (Treball de Recerca) under the supervision of Anna Laromaine. She will work with different kinds of paper, cellulose and silk to discover the differences and similarities between them.
Welcome and we hope you enjoy this summer with us!
